Fast Times, Festive Spirit Highlight Firecracker

5 Jul 2018 by Beth

The July 4th Firecracker Mile, the annual race that kicks off Truckee’s parade, is now in the books and what a morning it was! Perfect blue skies and an eager group of volunteers greeted 541 excited runners of all ages and sizes done up in wild, patriotic fashion.

New this year was the use of chip (RFID) timing by Big Horn Racing to ensure very accurate results. This year’s winner, Conner Fisher from Lake Isabella, CA came in at 4:15, easily bettering last year’s winning result of 4:33. A former Firecracker victor, Michelino Sunseri from Truckee, placed second at 4:26 and Luis Palacios from Reno was third. The current record for the fastest Firecracker Mile still stands at 4:05.

On the women’s side Leigh Moffett, who also took the title last year, won with a time of 4:49, shaving nineteen seconds off of her 2017 result. Moffett also won the Sierra Crest Ultra Run 30k race last year. Ramona Sanchez was just one second behind her with Lauren Tanner coming in third.

The oldest runner this year was 80 year old Donald Hillebrandt from Oakland who came in at 10:44. There were twenty-two children under 5 in the event and some very impressive runners under ten.

“Thanks to Tahoe Mt. Sports for being such a great race partner,” said ASC Race Director Meg Seifert. “I also want to thank Salomon, Mt. Lion Aviation, 50/50 Brewing Company, Darn Tough Socks, and Leki for sponsoring the event as well. We greatly appreciate their support and that of the Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce.” All Firecracker Mile participants can still take advantage of their ten percent discount at Tahoe Mt. Sports with proof of race registration.

ASC Training Center hosts three summer running events, all of which serve as benefits for their Nordic and Biathlon programs. Next up is the 38th Annual Squaw Mountain Run on July 28th followed by the Sierra Crest Ultra Run on August 4th.
